Shane Ivie's Forges |
Shane currently uses two different forges, one for forging and heat treating in and another one for forge welding. This is the idea situation for most bladesmiths, as the forge welding forge is going to require much more maintenance than a standard forge. Above you can see Shane's smaller forge he uses for forging and heat treating. |
This forge features front and rear hinged doors made from a 1" slice of pipe to help protect and capture the Inswool used in the doors. Also notice the steel protectors welded around the door opening, great idea for protection of the Inswool lining! |
This shows Shane's shop arrangement with the recirculating quench tank conveniently located right next to the forge as well as the tempering oven only a step away! |
The forge lined with Inswool and top-coated with Satanite and ITC-100. This picture really illustrates how well the 1" rings for the doors capture and protect the Inswool. You can see that Shane is using Mapp gas with a standard Mapp torch for this small efficient forge. |

This is Shane's forge welding forge, built in collaboration with Mike Gardner when he was in the area for work. |
You'll notice in the pictures above and below that Shane used a forced air burner for his forge welding forge due to its increased control and efficiency. |
