The pictures above and below show Jerid's Forge. It is constructed of 8x8x18" steel square tubing and is lined with Inswool and Satanite. The twin burners are venturi style burners. This forge runs well and easily reaches forge welding temps according to Jerid! |
The inner chamber of this forge is cylindrical (created by forming the Inswool lining into a circle shape and held in place when the Satanite cures fully) and with the burners at an angle blowing to the top for the chamber it creates a vortex inside. The original design had the burners coming straight into the top with the flame blowing on the work piece which was NOT good. It created too much scale on the blades, and hence the top burner inlet holes are no longer used. |
Here is a little something Jerid is trying out. He placed a fan about 1.5' in front of the venturi burners and turned it on low. This kind of made it a modified forced air forge and allowes him to run it at very low propane pressure and not have the burners burp back and burn inside the tube. More testing will need to be done with this setup to see how much additional scale it produces. Jerid is a great bladesmith and his home page is located at: http://www.JeridJohnson.com |
